BLOG 4 –The Importance of Employee Wellbeing

Employee wellbeing can be described as a collection of optimistic factors such as mental, physical health, safety at work and sound financial gains of an employee.

Guest and Conway (2004) defined “wellbeing in terms of six constructs including: a manageable workload, personal control over the job, support from colleagues and supervisors, positive relationships at work, a reasonably clear role and a sense of control of involvement in changes in the organization”.

As defined by the above author wellbeing of employees can be prolonged further to a holistic approach where the employees would anticipate factors like healthier working culture, compassionate peers and convenient working hours etc.

More than 68% of senior human resource managers have ranked employee wellbeing as a top priority in the 2021 HR Sentiment Survey. Specially with the COVID-19 outbreak employers had to rethink and revamp the employee wellbeing policies.

Why employee wellbeing is important

Increased motivation and employee engagement – The healthier environment of an organization will uplift the employee to work hard and fulfill their task beyond expectations. In addition to this wellbeing initiatives can keep the employees connected with the company. They would feel safer than any other place of work.

Increased productivity – If relevant staff wellbeing methods are implemented within the organization it is likely to avoid any unnecessary stress and conflicts between employees. And will lead to efficient and innovative outcomes from workers along with increased satisfaction.

Employer branding – Employee wellbeing can help to increase the reputation as a healthy organization to work among talents available in the job market. This can help to attract the best talent where they too will choose the company over competitive rivals and retain the existing talent pool while reducing employee turnover.

Challenges when implementing employee wellbeing

Implementing the appropriate employee wellbeing program can be challenging for the company because employee expectations can differ person to person and on the nature of the organization. And the resources and time taken to plan and execute wellness initiatives can also be a challenge under present market conditions.

Conclusion

Regardless of the obstacles it is essential for organizations to adopt methods to improve employee wellbeing since the human capital is one of the key element of the company’s asset base. By creating an environment where the employees are happy and satisfied can lead to highly profitable outcomes for the company.
