Defining Talent Management

Talent management is a comprehensive flow of recruiting, providing training & development, managing and retaining the human capital within an organization effectively. Firms require to employ competent individuals and grow and develop their current pool of employees to reach their organizations overall goals.

Duttagupta (2005) described Talent Management as “In the broadest possible terms, Talent Management is the strategic management of the flow of talent through an organization. Its purpose is to assure that a supply of talent is available to align the right people with the right jobs at the right time based on strategic business objectives”.

It is essential for an organization to focus on 3 key areas when managing the talent.

Recruitment and Employee Attraction

Recruiting is the process of acquiring talent to an organization. However, the candidates should be a proper fit for the specific designation or job role at the right time. Employee attraction refers to luring top talent to the organization through tactics such as financial benefits, employer branding, employee value propositions, organizational culture and reputation.

Talent Development & Employee Engagement

Talent Development (TD) can be described as the initiatives carried out to enhance the skills and competencies of the employees through talent identification, training (upskilling & multi-skilling), managing by mobilizing and uplifting careers. Engagement can also be part of TD which refers to the creation of an atmosphere within the organization for the employees to be committed and contribute with a thorough understanding on the direction and common objectives/goals of the organization.

Talent Retention

Talent Retention can be elaborated as the policies or strategies adopted by organizations to ensure that the expert employees remain at the company and safeguard them from competitor headhunting. Retaining the highly competent staff is vital for any organization since those who are with broader work knowledge and experience drive the business towards its purposes.  Recognition and remuneration incentives helps to retain the talented employees.

Conclusion

In order to have a pool of competent, skilled and talented employee cadre, it is critical to implement required structural frameworks, strategies and policies by the organization which will help the company to reach its vision and organizational objectives.
