Learning and Development
(L&D) can be elaborated as one of the important components of Human
Resource functions. The Human Resource Department of the company has to provide
methods for its employees to continuously develop their knowledge and skills in
order to be competent and grow their career.
L&D can be
differentiated from Training & Development, where T&D will be focused
and specific on a particular job related or product related. Whilst L&D is
more of exploring and enhancing employees’ abilities.
Large organizations can have a separate department to identify employees who needs skill improvement while planning and conducting suitable learning programs in appropriate methods
Learning and Development techniques
Classroom based learning
–
A group of employees are
selected, gathered to a specific location or through online means and structured
courses are conducted by qualified internal or external facilitators.
Presentations, coaching activities and discussions takes place in order train
or communicate about products, processes and company policies.

job routines. In this method the participants can actively learn since they
undergo real scenarios.
Interactive learning – This
can be an effective method where the employees are provided with role playing,

highly useful in their day to day working scenarios.
Why Learning and Development
is important to an organization
To improve employee
performance & organizations growth – When relevant T&D is provided
constantly, workers can be specialized and experts in their job roles. This can
help them to excel their performances while producing results to grow the
business and creates a potential succession plan.
Recruiting is costly than
retention – Employee turnover could be worrying if necessary opportunities for
workers to develop aren’t provided by the company. And fresh workers could
create uncertain situations if they are not appropriately trained.
Creating a path for
innovation – Continuous effective learning and development can enhance critical
skills and knowledge of individuals, which could lead to new innovations of
products and processes.
