BLOG 3 – Appraising the performance of employees with a modern phase

 What is a performance appraisal?

A performance appraisal can be explained as a review or an evaluation carried out quarterly, bi-annually or annually, of the achievement or the performance of the employee against the target set by the organization. Appraisals can help to identify the position where the employee stands and helps to decide on the actions which should be taken to appreciate or revive for improved performance.

In the modern days, the performance appraisal methods heavily depend on the outcomes and achievements of the employees rather than focusing other areas such as the personality and traits.

Why implement a modern appraisal method

The modern methods help the management to identify the key competencies, strengths and weaknesses of their employees since it is more transparent and accurate. Through this, the management can identify required training and skill development programs for the specific employees.

Modern performance appraisals are decisive in increasing the efficiency and productivity of employees as they indicate the actual illustration of current performances.

The company can clearly define and communicate its desired goals and objectives laid down for each employee category. And align the direction of employees with the overall vision of the organization.

Finally, identifying and improving employee’s abilities, skills and competencies to offer rewards according to their performance can increase the employee engagement and retention with the company.

Brief introduction of few Modern Performance Appraisal method

1Management by Objectives (MBO) – Supervisors and employees identify, organize and communicate the objectives which are to be achieved. SMART goals are set and reviewed periodically by the supervisors and rewarding is done depending on the achievements.

2. 360-Degree Feedback Method –  Employees are evaluated depending on multidimensional feedbacks received from the particular employee’s managers, supervisors, peers and other colleagues.

3. Assessment Centre Method – Employees are assessed through the participation of employees in several activities such as role-plays, discussions and work groups. The employees and supervisors can identify the abilities and skills after evaluation.

4.  Human Resource Account Method – The performance of an employee is evaluated in terms of financial/monetary benefits the company gets while considering factors such as overheads and other inputs.

Conclusion

Accurate and transparent evaluation is highly critical for an organization. Hence the modern appraisal methods can help the company to productively make use of the human capital towards organizational and employee growth.

  1. Well written article but on the other hand how many organisations following the appraisal without bias approach. If appraisal process doesn't link to compensation and benefits it will be mere document and employees will not take it seriously
